Jal Sanjhi (meaning Water Painting) is a rare temple art where the life and times of Lord Krishna – a major deity of the Hindu religion- is depicted on water. Jal Sanjhi originated in Mathura – the birth place of Lord Krishna but gradually disappeared. It was revived by one family in Udaipur who is trying to keep the art alive. With a canvas of water rather than paper or cloth, they’ve been practicing the art of Jal Sanjhi for generations. Every painting depicts only one subject: the Hindu god, Krishna.
As one legend says, these paintings came into origin when Lord Krishna’s image was seen in the water by ‘Radha’ in a pond, and the image was outlined with flowers to make a picture of the Lord. Since then it has evolved as Sanjhi which are made to honor the Lord Krishna’s ‘Leela’ in the form of pictorial depiction on water.
Jal Sanjhi takes different amount of time depending on the scene from the life of Lord Krishna. A basic version of the painting can be done in 30 minutes that last for 04-05 hours. The award-winning priest of Shri Radha Vallabh Temple of Udaipur performs the art in the temple premises. This is a true slice of India’s and Udaipur’s heritage, unique and authentic.
Jal Sanjhi is a delight for every art lover. These paintings are open for public viewing every evening at their temple in the Old City during the course of the ‘Shrad Paksha’.
